Limestone that forms in hot mineral springs.
Travertine marble is a variety of banded limestone formed around hot or cold springs, where mineral-rich spring water slowly precipitated, creating 'holes' where carbon dioxide bubbles were trapped as the stone was forming. Classic travertines are dark in color, however, dark reds and travertines exhibiting dark brown veining are also available.
It can be effectively polished to a smooth, shiny finish. Travertine is most commonly available in tile sizes for floor installations.
Travertine is one of the most frequently used stones in modern architecture, and is commonly seen as facade material, wall cladding, and flooring. Many people choose it for patio and garden pathways due to its natural features.
